A 62-year-old man was killed early Saturday in a traffic accident on the road from Praitori to Kedares in the Paphos district, authorities said.
The victim was identified as Petros Petrou Papasavva, a native of Praitori and resident of Limassol.
According to Assistant Police Director of Operations Michalis Nikolaou, the crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. when Papasavva’s vehicle struck the rear of a stationary road roller, which was being operated by a 36-year-old resident of Paphos.
Police said the road roller had stopped on the left side of the road, in the direction of traffic, as the driver was preparing to make a right turn onto a rural road.
The impact of the collision trapped Papasavva inside his vehicle. Emergency responders from the Fire Service extricated him, and he was taken by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities issued a court warrant for the arrest of the road roller operator, who was taken into custody to assist with the investigation.
The Paphos Traffic Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
