The Union of Cypriot Pensioners (EKYSY) has criticized the Ministry of Labour for rejecting its request to advance May pension payments, citing concerns over the financial strain caused by a prolonged gap between payments.
In a statement Saturday, EKYSY expressed disappointment with what it called the Ministry’s dismissive response, which focused solely on legal constraints and overlooked the hardships faced by many elderly pensioners.
EKYSY had requested that the May pensions be paid earlier than the scheduled May 29–30 dates. The union noted that the nearly 50-day gap from the previous payments on April 9–10, which had been moved up due to Easter, poses difficulties for thousands of low-income pensioners.
These pensioners rely on the funds to cover essential expenses such as food, medicine, and utilities, and the delay threatens to exacerbate their financial challenges.
By denying the request, the Ministry missed an opportunity to ease the burden on vulnerable elderly citizens, EKYSY said. The union argued that advancing the payment would have helped alleviate the impact of the extended wait between disbursements.
