Limassol police have arrested a man on fraud charges based on a warrant by Russian authorities

Newsroom

A foreign national wanted by Russian authorities has been arrested in Limassol by local police in connection with a fraud case.

According to police, a 42-year-old man was detained Tuesday on a temporary Cypriot arrest warrant, following information that Russian authorities had an international warrant for his arrest and extradition.

The suspect, described as a dual citizen of Russia and Ukraine, is reportedly facing charges of fraud and forgery but it was not immediately clear where the alleged offences had been committed.

Police told Knews it was not yet clear whether the suspect would consent to his extradition. The man, who was arrested at 6pm, has yet to appear before a judge for his arraignment according to sources.

If the suspect fights the extradition request, then Cyprus authorities will need more information from Russia in order to begin court hearings.
