Authorities in Cyprus said that eight foreign nationals were detained after being caught working illegally at a construction site in Larnaca during a coordinated labor inspection.

The sweep, part of a nationwide effort to curb undeclared and illegal employment, involved labor inspectors and police from across the island, along with units monitoring migration flows and the Green Line.

Officials said 33 workers at the site were checked. Eight foreign nationals were taken into custody on suspicion of illegal employment. The workers had been hired by four contractors. One contractor was arrested at the site, while the other three later reported to police for questioning.

Labor inspectors also cited multiple labor law violations, including undeclared work and breaches of provident fund rules. Seven fines were issued, totaling €52,000.

Police said inspections targeting illegal employment will continue in collaboration with other agencies.
