Authorities in Larnaca are investigating a suspected case of domestic abuse after an elderly woman was heard crying for help from behind a locked door in her home.

Police said the 79-year-old woman, who suffers from dementia, has been placed under the care of Social Welfare Services and moved to a nursing facility for her safety. Her 58-year-old son is expected to face charges under Cyprus’ Domestic Violence Law, according to investigators with the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department.

The incident, first reported by Philenews, prompted officers from the Domestic Violence Unit to respond to the residence, where they found the woman alone. Police said her son was not at home when they arrived.

Social Welfare officials said they had no prior reports of abuse involving the family. However, a note submitted on Sept. 29 by a friend of the woman’s daughter had requested that authorities consider relocating the elderly woman to a care home due to her declining health.

Officials added that a caseworker had already begun arranging the woman’s transfer when the incident occurred.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing to determine the circumstances of the woman’s living conditions before her removal.
