Police have arrested two men in connection with the alleged kidnapping and intimidation of a 69-year-old woman in the Morphou district, in a case that has raised concern over crimes targeting elderly residents.

According to police, the incident began on the afternoon of May 16, when an unknown man allegedly entered the woman’s home in a village in the Nicosia district and demanded money while threatening her.

Frightened, the woman handed over €200 in cash, police said, before the man left the scene.

Authorities say the suspect later returned to the woman’s home and again used threats to force her into his car. He then drove her to a bank where she held an account.

Police said the suspect allegedly tried to withdraw money from an ATM using the woman’s bank card but was unsuccessful. He later drove her back home.

A 40-year-old man arrested in connection with the case is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court on Tuesday for a detention hearing.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old suspect who had already been placed under arrest appeared in court Monday, where his detention was extended for another four days.

The case has shocked many because of the alleged targeting of an elderly woman living alone, highlighting ongoing concerns about the vulnerability of older residents, particularly in rural communities.

The Morphou Criminal Investigation Department is continuing its investigation.
