EU warns airlines to avoid Iranian skies until end of March

Rising tensions and advanced air defenses make flying over Iran too risky for commercial flights, says Europe’s aviation safety watchdog.

European airlines have been told to steer clear of Iranian airspace until at least March 31, the bloc’s aviation safety regulator said Thursday, extending an earlier warning as tensions in the region escalate.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) cited the “presence and potential use of a wide range of weapons and air defense systems,” combined with unpredictable government responses, as creating “a high risk for civil flights at all altitudes and flight levels.”

Regional leaders, and global observers alike, are increasingly concerned that stalled nuclear talks between Iran and the United States could spark a wider military conflict.

Iran has warned that any attack would be met with a “severe response” and has cautioned neighboring Gulf states that host U.S. bases; they could become targets if they get involved.

The advisory underscores growing safety worries for airlines operating over the Middle East, where even routine commercial flights could face significant risks amid rising geopolitical uncertainty.
