Fire near Psimolofou burns two hectares before being contained

Firefighters and local volunteers brought the blaze under control within 40 minutes of its outbreak.

A fire that broke out on Tuesday afternoon near Psimolofou in Nicosia district was contained within less than an hour after burning approximately two hectares of land.

According to the Department of Forests, the blaze started at around 5:30 p.m. in the area known as Vounos. Firefighters succeeded in bringing the situation under control by 6:10 p.m., limiting the affected area to low-growing vegetation and several olive trees.

The response involved 20 Department of Forests personnel supported by five firefighting vehicles. The Fire Service also deployed 10 firefighters and three engines to assist with the operation.

Local volunteers contributed to the effort, providing four agricultural tractors and two excavators to help contain the flames and prevent further damage.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the fire.
