Fire crews are working to contain a wildfire near the village of Arsos in the Limassol district after flames spread from a landfill into surrounding countryside on Thursday.
According to the Fire Service, the blaze is burning dry grass and wild vegetation. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said the fire started at a landfill before extending into nearby land.
A large firefighting operation has been launched. Five fire engines from Limassol city and district stations are at the scene, supported by six vehicles from the Department of Forests. Two bulldozers have also been sent to help create access routes and firebreaks to limit the fire's spread.
Four aerial firefighting aircraft are assisting crews from the air as efforts continue to bring the blaze under control.
The Fire Service's Operations Centre at headquarters is coordinating the response, with the Chief Fire Officer and the head of the Operations Centre directing operations in cooperation with the officer in charge at the scene.
No injuries or damage to homes had been reported at the time of publication, while firefighting efforts remained ongoing.
