Moldova’s President Maia Sandu arrived in Cyprus on Thursday for a historic visit, the first by a Moldovan head of state in 22 years. She was officially welcomed at the Presidential Palace by President Nikos Christodoulides, with military bands performing and both national anthems played. Sandu also laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, a symbolic gesture honoring Cyprus’ founding leader.

The leaders then held a private meeting, followed by extended talks between their delegations. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as justice, education, and transport. Diplomatic sources noted that the visit highlights the importance of Cyprus’ upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which begins January 1, 2026.

Moldova is seeking Cypriot support in its EU accession process. While the country has made significant progress in pre-accession reforms, its accession is closely linked to Ukraine’s path. Sources also highlighted the relevance of Cyprus’ backing after Moldova recently complied with EU sanctions against Turkey over unauthorized drilling in the Mediterranean.

Describing the visit as “historic,” Christodoulides said it comes at a crucial moment for both Cyprus and Moldova. “Cyprus fully respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova,” he said. “During our presidency, we will do everything to advance your country’s European path. Cyprus will continue to be a staunch supporter of your accession efforts.”

President Sandu expressed optimism about Cyprus’ upcoming EU Council Presidency and emphasized the importance of continued close ties between the two countries. She said the visit offers an opportunity to advance practical cooperation while reinforcing Moldova’s European orientation.
