Friday forecast: A dusty prelude to the Holy Week sprint

The wind is currently the main event, but Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday are about to take the spotlight.

The air is feeling a bit textured this morning, and, for that, you can thank the incoming dust. We’re under the influence of a weak low-pressure system that’s decided to provide some atmospheric grit just in time for the weekend. Today, you’ll want to keep the windows shut and maybe keep the umbrella nearby. Periods of clouds are expected to deliver isolated showers, with a rogue thunderstorm potentially crashing the party later on. Since most of us are still recovering from the Daylight Saving time-jump, a bit of afternoon thunder might actually be the wake-up call the island needs.

Temperatures are playing it cool at 19°C inland and along the coasts, while the higher mountains are shivering at 8°C. The wind is the real talker today, blowing from the southwest to west at a moderate to strong 5 Beaufort, making the sea a bit too restless for a casual boat trip. If you’re heading out, hold onto your hats, and maybe your sense of humor, because the gusty conditions are set to persist through the evening.

Tonight, things settle down with mostly clear skies, though the mountains and western areas might still see some low clouds clinging to the scenery. But the real action starts tomorrow as we hit a major double-header on the religious calendar. On Saturday of Lazarus, kitchens across Cyprus will smell of baking Lazarakia (small, sweet spice breads in the shape of a buried Lazarus); much like the man himself, the weather might show some signs of life, with intervals of clouds bringing isolated showers or thunderstorms. If you’re in Larnaca for the festivities around the Church of Saint Lazarus, you might find yourself "rising from the dead" to dodge a sudden downpour.

Sunday is a busy one, serving as Palm Sunday for the Orthodox majority and Easter Sunday for those following the Western tradition. The atmosphere is celebrating with a mostly cloudy mood, gradually shifting into local showers and thunderstorms after midday. It’s a classic 'bring the olive branch but don't forget the umbrella' kind of morning. By Monday, the unstable theme sticks around with more isolated showers, while temperatures refuse to budge, staying just slightly below the seasonal average. Between the dust and the rain, it’s a weekend for spiritual reflection and very sturdy rain gear.
