Friday forecast: Sahara's weekend road trip has officially begun

Keep the car windows up and the laundry far from the balcony.

Newsroom

The horizon is looking a little crowded this morning as our neighbors in North Africa have officially sent a massive shipment of suspended dust our way. To top it off, it’s Friday the 13th, and while we aren't superstitious, a low-pressure system hitching a ride from Egypt to turn our sky into a hazy, grit-filled mess does feel like a bit of a cosmic prank. This dusty guest is planning to linger until Sunday, so maybe avoid walking under any ladders while you're squinting through the haze.

The morning starts off relatively bright, but the afternoon is planning a bit of a disappearing act behind a blanket of medium and high clouds. If you’re heading into the Troodos foothills or the southwest, you might encounter a stray shower trying to settle that dust on your windshield. Temperatures are holding onto a very respectable 21°C inland and on the coast, essentially a polite farewell from spring before Saturday’s scheduled tantrum. The wind is still leaning into that northeasterly chill, blowing a steady 3 to 4 Beaufort, with some "assertive" 5 Beaufort gusts along the coast.

Tonight, the weak high pressure officially loses the argument. The clouds will thicken up, and by the early hours, the southern and western coasts might see the first raindrops of the weekend. The wind will also be pulling an all-nighter, strengthening to a punchy 5 Beaufort.

Saturday: Expect a "copy-paste" of gray. It’s going to be mostly cloudy with local showers and the potential for isolated thunderstorms. If a storm hits your area, don't be surprised to see some hail. And if you’re on the very highest peaks of Troodos, that rain might just turn into sleet or a cheeky dusting of snow.

Sunday: The worst of the atmospheric noise clears out, but the sky remains indecisive. Expect some morning showers in the west, followed by afternoon "pop-up" thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and the corners of the island.

Temperature outlook
Saturday is bringing a noticeable temperature drop, pulling us below the seasonal average. Sunday tries to apologize by warming back up, only for Monday to bring another slight chill.

The bottom line: Keep the antihistamines close, the umbrella in the car, and your Saturday plans indoors. It’s a "Netflix and heater" kind of weekend forecast.
