Thursday forecast: A very strong attitude and a side of Sahara

Enjoy the 22°C flirtation with spring; the dust is moving in for a weekend sleepover.

Newsroom

If you thought the wind was done with its morning workout, think again. While we’re still technically under weak high pressure, the atmosphere is currently acting like it’s had one too many espressos.

Today starts off bright and sunny, but don’t let the blue skies fool you. The North Wind is back in a big way. Inland and along the northern/eastern coasts, we’re looking at northeasterly gusts reaching a "very strong" 6 Beaufort. It’s the kind of weather that makes your laundry migrate to the neighbor’s yard and turns a simple walk into a resistance training session. If you’re in the southwest, consider yourself lucky; you’re getting a much gentler 3 to 4 Beaufort. Temperatures are hovering at a comfortable 20°C inland and a lovely 22°C on the coast, while the mountains are enjoying a double-digit 10°C. Just watch out for a rogue afternoon shower if you're hiking in the peaks or the southwest.

Tonight, the wind finally decides to take a breather, calming down to a gentle 3 Beaufort for most, though the southeast coast might still feel a bit of a lingering chill.

As we look toward the weekend, the weather is preparing for a bit of a mood swing:

Friday: The "dust" situation is upgrading from a minor annoyance to a headline act. Expect concentrations to rise as the day goes on. The sky will be wearing a thick layer of high clouds, and the mountains might see a stray shower in the afternoon.

Saturday: This is the main event. A low-pressure system is arriving from the south, bringing clouds, local showers, and the potential for a thunderstorm to crash your Saturday plans. If you're heading to the very top of Troodos, don't be surprised to see a bit of sleet mixed in with the rain.

Sunday: The drama hangs around for an encore. While it might start clearer, the clouds will gather again after lunch for more isolated showers and potential thunder, mostly in the mountains.

The bottom line is, we’re holding steady at above-average warmth until Friday, but Saturday is going to bring a reality check (and a drop in temperature). Enjoy the 22°C while you can, and maybe double-check that your balcony furniture is bolted down.
