Frontex commends Cyprus for successful immigration management

Head of Frontex Liaison Office praises Cyprus's strategy, highlighting increased returns and reduced arrivals in immigration management

Grigorios Apostolou, the Head of the Frontex Liaison Office for Greece and Cyprus, commended Cyprus for its effective immigration management strategy.

During a meeting with Cyprus Minister of the Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, Apostolou was briefed on the Cypriot government's policies, which aim to reduce immigration arrivals and increase returns.

The Frontex official praised Cyprus for its successful approach to managing immigration. Minister Ioannou highlighted the significance of Frontex's role in the region and its presence in Cyprus, expressing optimism that strengthened EU border controls would enhance border surveillance in the Eastern Mediterranean and prevent irregular arrivals.

The Action Plan for the Eastern Mediterranean, involving collaboration between Europol, Frontex, and Eurojust, focuses on combating migrant trafficking rings. The officials discussed reinforcing cooperation between Cyprus and Frontex in the field of returns, with Minister Ioannou citing a 66% increase in departures due to measures implemented by Cyprus.

Apostolou commended Cyprus's commitment and efficiency, expressing Frontex's readiness to continue supporting Cyprus for better results beneficial to both the country and the European Union.
