Frustration mounts at crossing points

Technical snags, tighter checks and too few checkpoints leave drivers waiting for hours.

Drivers faced long waits and frustration at crossing points between the occupied north and the government-controlled south of Cyprus over the weekend, with traffic bottlenecks stretching for hours.

According to Turkish Cypriot media, the delays mainly affected Turkish Cypriots heading into the Republic-controlled areas on Saturday and Sunday, sparking widespread irritation.

Many blamed the holdups on stricter checks by Republic of Cyprus authorities. Others pointed to problems on both sides, noting that the number of checkpoints remains limited and that some in the north are poorly equipped to handle heavy traffic.

While the logjam is largely seen as a technical issue, some Turkish Cypriot outlets suggested it reflects deeper political tensions, citing poor coordination, lack of political will, and one-sided practices that keep the crossings from running smoothly.

For now, drivers are left to sit in line, caught between red tape and politics, as frustrations simmer on both sides of the divide.
