Garbage piles up at popular Kritou Terra landmark

Beauty of famed waterfall overshadowed by growing garbage problem.

Newsroom

Once celebrated as one of the island’s natural jewels, the Kritou Terra waterfalls have now been marred by garbage, sparking strong reactions from locals and visitors alike.

Photos circulating online show heaps of waste scattered across the site, transforming a beloved attraction into what some describe as a dumping ground. The waterfall, which draws more than 30,000 visitors each year, is considered one of the region’s most striking natural landmarks.

Nestled within the lush surroundings of the Kremmiotis River in the Pafos region, the area is known for its cascading waters, rich birdlife, and rare flora and fauna. The site’s unique geological formations and two-part waterfall structure have made it a destination for both tourists and nature enthusiasts.

But the mounting trash threatens not only the pristine scenery, but also the ecological balance that has long defined the area. The pollution has raised concerns over environmental degradation, loss of wildlife habitat, and damage to the reputation of a site that has become a point of pride for the local community.

Calls are growing for the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous and other relevant authorities to intervene.
