The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will visit the Reception and Hospitality Center for International Protection Applicants in Kofinou on Tuesday as part of his official visit to Cyprus.
During his visit to the Centre, accompanied by the Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, the German President will receive updates from the Minister and will be given a tour of the facilities. He will also have the opportunity to engage in conversations with residents and staff of the Centre.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the Kofinou Reception Centre currently accommodates around 400 individuals, including families, single men, and women. Approximately 80 children are hosted at the Centre, attending public schools and participating in educational and other activities provided in collaboration with NGOs and volunteer groups. The Centre operates on an open-door policy with a maximum stay duration of six months.
Additionally, renovation and expansion works are underway at the Centre. Upon completion, the Centre's capacity will reach 750-800 beds, and new medical facilities, recreational areas, and other amenities will be established.
The Ministry of Interior expects the project to be completed by 2024, with 75% co-funding from the European Commission's Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund, supported by the European Union Agency for Asylum.
