Greek and Turkish Cypriot expats stand united in London

A powerful show of solidarity for jailed activists

Newsroom / CNA

A group of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots gathered on Thursday outside the Cyprus High Commission in London to express their solidarity with Öz Karahan and Giorgos Tattis ahead of their court hearing today at the Nicosia District Court.

According to a statement by the Union of Cyprus, the two Cypriots were arrested when they attempted to display a banner during the Independence Day celebrations in Cyprus on October 1, 2024.

"The protesters, holding the same banner that led to the arrest of the two men—which read ‘Republic of Cyprus: The Only Solution’ and ‘Apartheid Is Not a Solution’—demonstrated their solidarity and support for the imprisoned duo," the statement said. It added that a representative of the group made a public declaration of solidarity, emphasizing the importance of unity and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
