Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou will attend both funerals of the Hellenic Air Force officers aboard the F-4 “Phantom” fighter jet that crashed in the Ionian Sea on Monday.

On Thursday, Sakellaropoulou will travel to the Peloponnesian city of Tripoli to attend the funeral of co-pilot Lieutenant Marios-Michail Touroutsikas while on Friday she will travel to the northern city of Nevrokopi to attend the funeral of Captain Efstathios Tsitlakidis.

Greek state media reported that a two-seater F-4 jet was flying very low during a training exercise when it crashed 25 nautical miles south of the airport of Andravida in the Peloponnese peninsula.

Media outlets also speculated that the two young pilots failed to eject in time just before the plane hit the water.
