European Parliament President Roberta Metsola reaffirmed the EU body's firm support for Cyprus on Friday during a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

The visit, coinciding with Europe Day, included private talks and youth-focused events highlighting the island nation’s role in the European Union. Christodoulides thanked Metsola for her support and emphasized the importance of youth engagement, EU integration, and preparations for Cyprus's upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026.

“We are working intensively to ensure a results-oriented and ambitious presidency,” Christodoulides said, adding that Cyprus is also aiming to join the Schengen Area that year, which marks the 40th anniversary of the agreement.

Metsola, on her fourth visit to Cyprus, described the country as a model of EU participation, noting its strong voter turnout in the last European elections and its 21 years of EU membership. She reiterated the European Parliament’s continued backing of efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue under United Nations auspices, in pursuit of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

“The European Parliament will always stand by your side,” she said, praising Cyprus’s leadership and commitment to the European project.

Both leaders expressed a shared commitment to engaging young people and improving their prospects within the EU framework.
