IOC clears path for Russia's return to Olympic competition

Temporary lifting of the Russian Olympic Committee's suspension allows international federations to reconsider athlete participation.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has temporarily lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, ending a restriction that had been in place since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The decision removes the IOC's previous limitations on international sports federations concerning the participation of Russian athletes. Individual federations will now be able to reconsider whether and under what conditions Russian competitors can take part in international events.

Russia's Sports Minister, Mikhail Degtyarev, welcomed the announcement, describing it as an important step towards restoring the country's place in international sport.

He said Russia's return to the Olympic movement gives international federations the opportunity to reinstate all Russian athletes in their competitions.

The IOC's decision is expected to influence discussions across a range of sports as governing bodies examine the possibility of allowing Russian athletes back into international competition following years of restrictions.
