Attendance at accident and emergency departments across Cyprus remains consistent with seasonal expectations, according to the Cyprus State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), despite recent reports suggesting busier hospitals.
OKYPY spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou said patient numbers have not exceeded the levels normally seen at this time of year. He explained that emergency departments traditionally experience higher demand on weekends and during the summer months.
The increase is particularly noticeable in coastal districts, where holiday travel by residents and the arrival of tourists lead to more people seeking medical care.
Charilaou also said emergency departments are typically busier on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays because fewer staff members and specialist doctors are available outside regular working days.
He stressed that there is no indication of anything unusual and said the public has no reason to be alarmed.
The organisation has also seen no evidence that the recent spell of very hot weather has led to an increase in emergency cases linked to the heat. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation.
According to OKYPY, public hospitals remain fully prepared to treat patients arriving at accident and emergency departments and have the necessary resources in place to provide medical care.
Health authorities are encouraging people to take sensible precautions during the summer by drinking enough water, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, staying in shaded or air-conditioned places where possible, and ensuring food is properly stored, especially when travelling to beaches.
