Health experts are advising beachgoers to take simple precautions after a number of children developed skin rashes following visits to Lady’s Mile Beach.
Paediatrician Michalis Iasonidis said the condition is not limited to children and can also affect adults. Speaking on a television programme, he explained that naturally occurring microorganisms found in both seawater and beach sand can irritate the skin after contact.
He recommended applying sunscreen before entering the sea, saying it can help reduce the likelihood of microorganisms sticking to the skin. Washing thoroughly with clean water after leaving the beach is also an important step in preventing irritation, he added.
For people who develop more severe symptoms, Iasonidis said medical treatment, including an antihistamine where appropriate, may be required.
