The Community Council of Lythrodontas has cancelled a planned event for new National Guard recruits after graffiti was found on the walls of homes and public buildings in the village.
The gathering, which had been scheduled for Sunday, 12 July, was called off following a unanimous decision by the council, which condemned the overnight vandalism and described the messages painted around the community as unacceptable.
According to the council, the cancellation is intended as a clear response to the practice adopted by some young people of marking their enlistment in the National Guard by writing on walls and other property. Council members said this behaviour reflects poorly on both those responsible and the village itself.
The council stressed that respect for private and public property is a principle that cannot be compromised. It added that acts of vandalism have no place in a community that values pride in its appearance and respect for others.
Despite its criticism of those responsible for the graffiti, the council wished all new recruits good health, a successful enlistment and a safe period of military service. It also expressed hope that similar incidents will not be repeated in the future, saying such actions bring no credit to either the individuals involved or the community.
