A 27-year-old man was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly stealing a woman’s belongings while she was swimming at a Limassol beach, police said.

The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m., when a 68-year-old woman left her bag unattended on the beach before entering the water. The bag contained two mobile phones, €200 in cash, bank cards and clothing, according to a police statement.

When the woman returned around 1:15 p.m., she discovered the bag was missing and reported the theft. She told officers she had noticed an unfamiliar man in the area around the time the bag disappeared.

Officers with the Bicycle Police located a man matching the description near the Epichosi area shortly before 2 p.m. A search of the suspect turned up the two phones, €140 in cash and several packs of cigarettes. The remaining stolen items were later recovered nearby, discarded in an open area.

The suspect was taken into custody and, during questioning, allegedly confessed to the theft.

Limassol Central Police Station is leading the investigation.
