‘Would you let your children play in toxic waters?’

Cyprus Ports Authority activates environmental protocol after oil residue leak.

The Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA) said it has activated its environmental management protocol following an oil residue leak detected Saturday in the coastal port area of Moni.

In a statement, the CPA said the leak was initially identified by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, which carried out a preliminary response on site.

The authority said it promptly assigned a licensed contractor to contain the pollution and implement anti-contamination measures, in line with its environmental procedures.

Those efforts are ongoing, officials said, and restoration work at the site has already begun.

The CPA said it is taking action against the company that owns the pipeline involved in the leak, calling on the company to accept full responsibility, including dismantling and removing the pipeline.

“The Authority remains on high alert and assures the public that it is taking all necessary steps to protect the marine environment and prevent similar incidents in the future,” the statement said.

The leak has drawn criticism from beachgoers. One citizen who visited the area posted a photo online, writing: “Our feet, our children’s feet, covered in black residue that doesn’t wash off even with soap. No one informed us. No one warned us. No one closed the beach. Would you let your children play in toxic waters?”
