A senior citizen, who was spotted unconscious in the water at a Larnaca beach in Meneou, died of drowning after fellow beachgoers failed to revive him.
According to police, 78-year-old Nicosia resident Andreas Sofocleous had gone for an evening swim in Meneou on Sunday.
He was later spotted by concerned citizens, who pulled him out of the water and tried to resuscitate him using the CPR lifesaving technique.
An ambulance transported Sofocleous to Larnaca General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.
State forensic pathologist Eleni Antoniou, who performed the autopsy Monday morning, determined the man had died from drowning.
