A minor earthquake was registered in Cyprus on Monday early morning, with officials saying it was lightly felt due to deep focal depth.

According to United States Geological Services, the epicenter was 8 kilometres southwest of Lapithos (Lapta), northwest of the capital Nicosia.

Seismic activity reportedly took place at 2:16am, according to Cyprus News Agency, at 3.7 on the Richter scale.

Due to the earthquake taking place more than 50 kilometres deep in the ground, the vibration was only lightly felt on the island, however it was felt in a greater number of areas due to long distance.

CNA said seismic activity was picked up 10 kilometres southwest of Nicosia, with an estimated depth of 65 kilometres.
