The body of a British national that was reported missing from the mortuary at Nicosia General Hospital has been found, ending the search that prompted police and other relevant authorities to intervene.

According to OmegaLive, the remains were located inside the mortuary’s refrigerator but had been registered under a different name. Investigations subsequently confirmed the identity of the deceased, whose disappearance came to light when a funeral home representative arrived to collect his body for repatriation to the United Kingdom.

The man had died in Paphos approximately one month ago. Due to the circumstances of his death, his body was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital for a post-mortem examination, as the mortuary at Paphos General Hospital remains out of service.

The discrepancy was discovered when the funeral home representative could not locate the remains for collection. The absence of an official record explaining the body’s whereabouts led to a complaint to police, who began investigating the circumstances surrounding the case.

Authorities had been examining whether another funeral home had collected the body without the necessary authorization or whether established procedures had not been followed.

The case was first reported by Michalis Hatzivasilis, a journalist with the Phileleftheros.
