A new quarry is being proposed in Anogyra, in the Limassol district, where developers plan to extract approximately 130,000 cubic metres of calcareous sandstone from a site measuring 18,400 square metres.
The Environmental Authority has raised no objection to the proposal, provided that specific environmental conditions are met. The main impact identified in the assessment is the alteration of the area's natural terrain through excavation.
The authority has determined that a full Environmental Impact Assessment is not necessary, concluding that the project's environmental effects can be managed through appropriate safeguards and compliance with the conditions imposed.
Potential impacts include dust and noise from extraction work, emissions produced by operating machinery and changes to the area's existing landscape.
Quarry operator must restore site after extraction
The project will be subject to requirements covering dust and noise control, the safe handling of waste and fuel, and the rehabilitation of the site once quarrying activities have ended.
Restoration plans call for the ground to be reshaped and native vegetation to be replanted, with the aim of reducing lasting damage to the natural landscape.
The Environmental Authority's decision does not constitute final permission to begin quarrying. The project must obtain the other necessary permits before operations can start.
Other quarry proposals recorded in Anogyra
Anogyra is one of several locations in western Limassol where deposits of calcareous sandstone have been identified. The material is used mainly as building stone and in construction and engineering works.
Environmental records also contain applications for other proposed quarrying developments in the community. These include a project covering 4,750 square metres and a separate proposal submitted by G.S.A. Rocks Builders Ltd.
The latest proposal adds to the recorded interest in extracting stone in the area, with its implementation dependent on compliance with environmental conditions and the granting of the remaining permits.
