New Year’s Day chaos as strong winds uproot trees across Nicosia (pics)

Cyprus rings in 2026 with a gusty surprise, trees toppled, branches scattered, and streets transformed into a wind-blown mess.

Nicosia got a wild start to the new year yesterday as strong winds tore through the city, uprooting trees and sending branches crashing across streets and sidewalks.

Dramatic photos show gusts ripping up entire trees near “OXI” Square, leaving a trail of broken branches and toppled trunks. Locals described scenes more like a storm zone than a peaceful start to 2026.

Authorities had issued a Yellow Warning for the winds, urging residents to exercise caution outdoors and avoid areas with large trees or unstable structures.

While no major injuries were reported, the gusts caused traffic disruptions and served as a reminder that Cyprus’s winter can arrive with a dramatic flourish.

As crews worked to clear debris and restore normalcy, officials said the blustery conditions were expected to continue throughout the day, keeping residents on alert well into the afternoon.
