A Nicosia Criminal Court on Tuesday found inmate Veizi Bandur guilty of premeditated murder in the 2022 killing of fellow prisoner Tansu Cindan, 41, at the Central Prisons.

The unanimous verdict, detailed in a 300-page judgment, concluded Bandur fatally beat Cindan on Oct. 27, 2022, with “unlawful actions carried out with intent.” The court cited the prolonged, escalating assault, the victim’s pleas for help, and Bandur’s efforts to block guards from intervening. Cindan suffered extensive injuries before losing consciousness. Bandur was also found in possession of methamphetamine.

Two prison guards were convicted of manslaughter for failing to protect Cindan, neglecting checks, and not transferring him to the prison medical unit. A third guard was convicted, along with the others, of causing death through reckless conduct.

A fourth defendant was convicted of drug possession and distribution.

Sentencing arguments are scheduled for Aug. 13.
