Nicosia mayor reveals progress on €20M GSP redevelopment project

Revamped GSP to offer Nicosia large-scale green space and amenities

Newsroom

In autumn, Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yorkatzis revealed progress on the approximately €20 million redevelopment project of the old GSP, an essential green space. The initiative aims to complement the newly constructed Long Walk in the city center, drawing in visitors, workers, and residents.

Yorkatzis noted that the project is advancing well, with around 90% of the concrete works completed and the hard infrastructure nearing full readiness. Planting has commenced, with expectations for project completion by autumn.

Addressing potential delays, Yorkatzis acknowledged slight setbacks but affirmed the project's overall satisfactory progress. He clarified that the €20 million budget encompasses a decade of maintenance costs.

Upon completion, the revamped GSP will offer Nicosia a substantial green area featuring diverse amenities such as approximately 550 parking spaces, cafes, a potential Citizen Service Center, an amphitheater for cultural events, and a water-themed gathering square.

Moreover, the revitalized GSP will complement Nicosia's evolving city center, which includes landmarks like the new archaeological museum, the refurbished Municipal Theatre, enhanced cycling routes around the Parliament, the municipal garden, renovated Paphos Gate, various moat sections, Eleftherias Square, upgraded avenues like Makariou and Stasikratous, as well as the THOC building.

Yorkatzis emphasized that these upgrades aim to enhance the functionality and aesthetic appeal of Nicosia's center, with hopes of attracting visitors, employees, and potentially new residents.
