The redevelopment effort for the former SOPAZ industrial site is steadily advancing, according to an update from Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos. The mayor recently visited the area together with members of the committee overseeing the project, as part of the follow-up to the President of the Republic’s announcement on 30 June 2025.

During the site visit, officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Electromechanical Services Department, several state agencies, the Ministry of Energy, and the Municipality of Nicosia assessed the current state of the property. Participants noted both the clear signs of long-term neglect and the significant opportunities that a sustainable redevelopment could unlock for nearby communities (Kaimakli, Pallouriotissa, and Aglantzia) as well as for the wider capital and the country.

Mayor Prountzos expressed appreciation to all who took part in the inspection and confirmed that the feasibility study being prepared by KPMG is nearing completion. The study remains on schedule to conclude by the end of 2025, after which national and municipal bodies are expected to make key decisions in early 2026.

Once that stage is complete, authorities plan to launch an architectural ideas competition. This step will be carried out in cooperation with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK), following transparent, innovative consultation processes and ensuring respect for the historical character of the site.
