The project of conservation and new use of the old Municipal Market of Nicosia was awarded in the 'Highly Commended' category at the SHARE 2024 Architectural Awards of Central and South-Eastern Europe.
According to a press release by the Municipality of Nicosia, the award ceremony took place recently in Athens during the International Architecture Forum, SHARE Greece 2024.
The projects have been selected by 15 leading industry experts.
Their decision for the award, it is added, was based on the restoration and new use of the listed building, which is part of the Nicosia Municipality's strategy to create a Creative Business District and on the fact that the project was implemented with the Municipality's technical team, which was supported by external consultants.
The press release says that the listed building is a typical example of Postmodernism in Cyprus. It housed the Nicosia Municipal Market since 1965. Following its renovation and expansion it is now the permanent headquarters of the CYENS Center of Excellence.
The countries that participated with projects in the competition were Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Poland, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia.
