A decades-old hand grenade was safely destroyed Tuesday morning after being discovered near the Xyliatos Dam, police said.
Authorities said the explosive, believed to date back to the 1950s, was found late Monday following a tip from a local resident who spotted the object in a wooded area close to the dam. Police officers responding to the scene cordoned off the site and called in the bomb disposal unit.
Experts later identified the device as a military-style defensive grenade that is no longer in service with the National Guard. Despite its age and heavy oxidation, the grenade was determined to still be potentially active.
The bomb squad carried out a controlled detonation early Tuesday without incident, police said. No injuries or damage were reported.
