Early Tuesday morning, doctors at Pagni Hospital in Heraklion completed the organ retrieval procedure for little Angelos, the boy who was declared brain dead after suffering severe abuse at the hands of his mother and her partner.

Before the procedure began, surgical teams observed a minute of silence in memory of the child. In a statement, the Hellenic Transplantation Organization expressed “endless respect” for the boy’s grandmother, who made the decision to donate his organs. “We hope this act will help ease her unspeakable pain,” the organization said, also thanking hospital staff and authorities for their cooperation.

Shortly before 7 a.m., two ambulances, escorted by police, transported Angelos’ heart and kidneys to Heraklion airport. His heart was sent to a hospital in Berlin, while a team of doctors in Athens received his kidneys.

The case of Angelos shocked Greece, sparking outrage and renewed discussions on child protection laws. While his life was cut short in the most tragic of ways, his organs will now offer a second chance to patients in need.
