The atmosphere outside the Heraklion courthouse is tense as people gather to await the testimonies of the 26-year-old mother and her 44-year-old partner for the abuse of little Angelos, who is fighting for his life in the ICU of Heraklion University General Hospital.
The couple entered the Heraklion courthouse just before 11 a.m.
In the presence of a strong police force, they were escorted to the courthouse and entered the building through the back door to avoid incidents.
It is characteristic that the police have formed a human chain in the courthouse corridor, trying to prevent the crowd from approaching the accused.
Demoglidou: Even the police are shocked
Speaking about the case, ELAS spokesperson, Konstantina Demoglidou, reiterated how shocked the police officers handling the case are. "I don't know if they have ever dealt with such a badly abused child at such a young age. The child is very badly abused, the image shows that someone must be responsible," said Ms. Demoglidou.
As she added to Action24, "even doctors who are not forensic pathologists understood that all the marks on his body cannot be the result of a fall or an accident as the accused claim."
Referring to the 44-year-old's claims based on a video he showed the police, Ms. Demoglidou noted that "the video is from a few weeks ago."
"I never touched the child"
"I have nothing to do with the child's injury. It's all the mother's fault. I never touched him. Not even on Sunday morning, I didn't realize he had fallen. I saw the marks and bruises on his body, I asked his mother what had happened, and she kept telling me that Angelos fell and hurt himself. I had the videos of the child being beaten on my mobile phone because I wanted to report her, but every time she told me that if I did, she would report me. I feel very bad that I couldn't prevent the worst. My partner becomes erratic and aggressive many times," the 44-year-old stepfather is said to claim.
"I want to be examined by a psychiatrist"
According to information, the 44-year-old, through his lawyer Vasilis Noulezas, is expected to request an examination by a specialized psychiatrist-expert as he claims he suffers from deep depression for which he is taking medication. In addition, he intends to file a motion for a new forensic examination if the one already conducted does not explain how the 3-year-old boy was injured.
