New modern shelters will first appear in the tourist area before the project expands island-wide, aiming to improve daily travel for residents and visitors.

Getting around Paphos by bus is set to become a little more comfortable, as the municipality has started a wide-ranging upgrade of bus stops across the city.

The project, announced by Mayor Angelos Onisiforou, is aimed at modernizing public transport infrastructure and improving the daily experience of both residents and the thousands of visitors who rely on buses, especially during the busy tourist season.

Work has already begun in the city’s tourist area, one of the most frequently used parts of Paphos, where locals, workers, and holidaymakers share the same routes every day.

The new bus stops are expected to be more modern, safer, and more functional, replacing older structures that in some cases have not been updated for years. The municipality says the goal is to bring public transport facilities in line with what people would expect in a modern European city.

For many residents, especially those who rely on buses for commuting, shopping, or getting to work, even small improvements like shaded seating, better signage, and clearer information can make a noticeable difference in daily life, particularly during Cyprus’ long, hot summers.

The upgrade program will not stop at the tourist zone. According to the municipality, it will be gradually expanded to all neighborhoods and districts of Paphos, with the aim of restoring and modernizing every bus stop across the city.

Officials say the long-term goal is not just to improve appearance but to make public transport more attractive and practical overall, encouraging more people to leave their cars at home when possible.

For a city that continues to grow in both population and tourism, the investment is also seen as part of a broader push to improve urban services and quality of life.
