A case that stunned the country returns to the spotlight today as the trial of a 37-year-old father accused over the death of his three-year-old son gets underway at the Paphos District Court.
The father faces a charge of causing death through a reckless, negligent, or dangerous act, following the tragic incident in which the young boy fell from the fourth floor of a hotel in Paphos.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10am.
Until the start of the trial, the 37-year-old had been released under strict bail conditions. He was required to post €20,000 in cash bail, surrender all travel documents, remain on a stop list, report to Paphos Central Police Station once a week to sign in, avoid crossing the checkpoints, and provide police with his full residential address.
The Attorney General ordered the prosecution after reviewing the evidence gathered during the police investigation.
According to investigators, the boy was with his father and grandfather in the hotel's communal areas when he reportedly slipped away unnoticed and fell through an open window.
A post-mortem examination found that the child suffered severe head injuries and multiple injuries to his body and vital organs, consistent with a fall from a significant height.
The case has attracted widespread public attention, raising painful questions about child safety, parental responsibility, and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
The court is expected to begin hearing evidence as the trial gets underway today.
