Cyprus is heading toward a major demographic shift, Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos said in a social media post referencing comments he made during a television program.
Phedonos warned that by 2034, Greek Cypriots will be outnumbered by Muslims. By 2037, he said, Muslims will make up 51% of the population in Cyprus, urging reflection on what he called the rapid population decline of Greek Cypriots.
“At this moment, on the island of Cyprus, 60% of the population is Christian and 40% is Muslim,” he said. “In 2037, we will be 49% Christian and 51% Muslim.
“In Paphos District, 57% of the population is Greek Cypriot. By 2034, around 2032 to 2034, we will be 49% Greek Cypriot.
“I remind you of what has happened in Lebanon. In 2037, when 51% will be Muslim and 49% Christian, we should reflect on where things are heading.”
He also posted a short video of his remarks.
