A female bus driver was assaulted while operating a scheduled EMEL service in Limassol on Thursday, prompting passengers and another bus driver to intervene before police made an arrest.

The incident happened shortly before noon on Christaki Kranou Street in Germasogeia. According to preliminary information, a man who had been waiting at a bus stop boarded the bus and allegedly attacked the driver immediately after getting on. Reports indicate the suspect may have been under the influence of drugs.

The situation was brought under control with the help of the driver of another EMEL bus travelling in the opposite direction. After witnessing what was happening, the second driver stopped and, together with passengers from both buses, restrained the suspect until officers arrived.

Police arrested the man at the scene. The bus driver and a passenger who witnessed the assault later went to Germasogeia Police Station to provide statements as part of the investigation.

EMEL spokesperson Petros Theocharides condemned the attack in comments to philenews and expressed his appreciation to the passengers who stepped in quickly to assist and help restrain the suspect.
