Almost 68,000 single-use plastic bottles have been kept out of circulation at Ammos tou Kambouri beach in Ayia Napa through the use of a free drinking water station, according to data released during a recent environmental event.
The Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) said visitors collected 33,977 litres of chilled, filtered water from the station between August 1, 2025 and July 11, 2026. Based on those figures, the project prevented the use of 67,954 disposable plastic bottles.
Ammos tou Kambouri is one of nine Plastic-Free Beaches established across Cyprus as part of efforts to cut plastic waste. Alongside the water refill point, the beach includes recycling bins, a collection area for unwanted plastic beach toys, a designated smoking point, educational signs and an artwork made from plastic litter gathered from beaches.
The figures were presented during an event against plastic pollution held on Sunday as part of the "Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free – Destination Zero Waste Cyprus and Greece" programme.
The project is supported by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and Ayia Napa Municipality. It is an initiative of the TUI Care Foundation in partnership with the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative, bringing together tourism businesses, local authorities, residents and visitors to encourage lower use of single-use plastics and help reduce plastic pollution across the Mediterranean.
