Pets prohibited in Cyprus Civil Defence shelters

Authorities cite allergies and fear of animals as key reasons for the restriction.

Cyprus Civil Defence officials have confirmed that pets are not allowed inside public emergency shelters, a rule introduced because of safety and capacity concerns.

Civil Defence Director Maria Papa explained that shelters must be able to accommodate large numbers of people during emergencies. According to her, the presence of animals could create difficulties for individuals who are allergic to them or have a fear of animals.

Papa made the comments during an appearance on the Alpha Kalimera television program, where she said the restriction was designed to protect vulnerable shelter users and maintain order in crowded conditions.

Despite the current ban, the policy may change in the future. Papa said authorities are examining whether certain shelters could eventually permit pets, potentially marked with signs indicating that animals are allowed. She noted that reaching a decision will take time because officials must evaluate several practical and safety considerations.

The rule has drawn criticism from some residents, with many saying they would be reluctant to evacuate their homes if they were forced to leave their pets behind.

One exception already exists: assistance dogs will still be permitted inside Civil Defence shelters.
