The attempted murder in Lakatamia raises concerns over law enforcement's ability to tackle rising nightlife-linked crime

Newsroom

Police in Cyprus continue to be on high alert following an attempted murder in broad daylight on Tuesday (23/04) in Lakatamia, adding to a string of violent incidents linked to nightlife activities.

The incident, which occurred around noon on a main street, underscores concerns about law enforcement's ability to prevent serious crimes. Despite the victim's prior visit to a local police station, the perpetrators managed to ambush the 34-year-old man, shooting him while he was riding a motorcycle.

The victim, known to authorities, sustained critical injuries and underwent surgery at Nicosia General Hospital. Police have launched a manhunt for the assailants, but no arrests have been made.

Authorities suspect the attackers were familiar with the victim's movements, highlighting the need for enhanced preventive measures. The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about organized crime operating with impunity, posing a direct threat to public safety.

Police are analyzing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify the perpetrators. Meanwhile, the victim remains in critical condition, intubated and receiving treatment for complications at Nicosia General Hospital.

The attempted murder follows recent violent incidents, including the murders of Alexis Mavromichalis and Thanasis Kalogeropoulos last October, as well as the attempted murder of a 49-year-old man in January. These incidents underscore the challenges facing law enforcement in tackling crime associated with nightlife.
