A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 58-year-old woman in Limassol on Friday morning, prompting a nationwide search for the suspected driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run.
The victim, Dayawathie Salpadoru Thuppahige, a Sri Lankan national, was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Omonia Avenue at approximately 7:00 a.m. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, but doctors pronounced her dead shortly after arrival.
Police have identified the wanted driver as Mahmoud Alhaj Ali, an 18-year-old man from Syria. Authorities have issued a court arrest warrant for Alhaj Ali, who is being sought in connection with several serious charges, including causing death by negligence, fleeing the scene of an accident, and multiple traffic violations.
Thuppahige's identity was made public Friday evening, after her family in Sri Lanka was informed. The release of Alhaj Ali’s photo and personal details earlier in the day marked a significant step in the police’s appeal for public assistance in locating the suspect.
The Limassol Traffic Department is urging anyone with information on Alhaj Ali’s whereabouts to come forward. Members of the public can contact the Limassol Traffic Department at 25-805252, the Citizen’s Line at 1460, or their nearest police station.
Investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident remain ongoing, as police piece together the events that led to yet another tragedy on the island’s roads.
