A protest organized by the left-wing AKEL party took place outside the Presidential Palace on Monday, under the slogan "Against the system of corruption and cover-up!" The demonstration comes in response to the recent suspension of Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides, following a Supreme Court decision that has sparked controversy across political circles.
The government has expressed surprise at the protest, with officials questioning AKEL's motives. DISY, the center-right opposition party, accused AKEL of using the court's decision for political gain and vote-rigging purposes.
Several prominent figures were in attendance, including AKEL MPs, the President of the Ecologists' Movement, George Perdikis, party leader Charalambos Theopeptou, and representatives from the EDEK party. Demonstrators expressed frustration with what they see as a cover-up by the government. They supported the suspended Auditor General, who had been outspoken in his anti-corruption efforts.
Tensions have risen in recent weeks, with accusations from both sides as the political fallout from Michaelides' suspension continues to unfold.
