Heavy rain and storms sweep across Cyprus

Unstable weather conditions trigger yellow warning as roads become hazardous

Newsroom

Heavy rain has hit various parts of Cyprus as unstable weather conditions and weak low-pressure impact the region, according to the Meteorological Service. A yellow weather warning remains in effect until 5:00 p.m., cautioning citizens about the potential for localized showers, thunderstorms, and hail.

The Cyprus Weather Watchers page has posted videos showing the heavy rainfall in different areas. Motorists have been warned of dangerous conditions, especially on the Nicosia-Larnaca and Larnaca-Limassol highways, where visibility is severely reduced due to intense rain.

Weather Forecast

This afternoon, Cyprus is expected to see cloudy skies with widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds will be mainly southwest to northwest at 4 to 5 Beaufort, making the seas slightly rough.

Tonight, clouds will increase, particularly along the coast, where isolated showers are likely. Temperatures are expected to drop to 19°C inland, 20°C along the coast, and 11°C in the higher mountains.

Tomorrow, more localized showers and thunderstorms are predicted, especially in mountainous and inland areas. Winds will range from 3 to 4 Beaufort, and the sea will be rough to slightly choppy. Temperatures will peak at around 30°C inland, 28°C along the coast, and 20°C in the mountains.

For Tuesday, the weather will start to clear but may bring more showers in the afternoon. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be mostly sunny, with temperatures gradually rising above seasonal averages.

Road Safety Alert

Heavy rain has created hazardous driving conditions on major highways, including the Nicosia-Larnaca motorway near Kosi and the Larnaca-Limassol motorway near Kofinou. Drivers are advised to reduce speed and remain cautious due to poor visibility and slippery roads.

The authorities continue to monitor the weather situation and urge citizens to stay updated on forecasts and travel advisories.
