An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.1 shook Cyprus on Thursday afternoon, though reports of any damage have yet to emerge.

The earthquake, the epicentre of which was reportedly at Dasaki Achnas, 37km southeast of Nicosia, was felt across Cyprus at around 4:30pm but most notably rattled residents of high rise buildings in Nicosia and Larnaca, many of which were evacuated as a precaution.

The Cyprus Geological Survey Department showed the quake was of a magnitude of 5.1, and had a depth of around 68.5km.

Reports said members of the police mobilized immediately to patrol rattled areas in case affected residents required assistance, though no damage or casualties have so far been reported.

The quake also interrupted Parliament’s crucial discussion on the state budget.

Story will be updated as details emerge
