Rain drenches Cyprus, Makarios Stadium now a mini lake

Thunderstorms swept across the island in the past hour, flooding streets, soaking pavements, and giving us a break from the dust, but now we’ve got mud. Lots of it.

Well, that escalated quickly. One minute we were sweating through the dust, the next we were watching a full-blown thunderstorm take over Cyprus,  and wow, did it deliver. In the past hour, heavy rain and loud rumbles of thunder rolled in just like the forecast warned, and let’s just say... it didn’t hold back.

Over at Makarios Stadium, the pitch now looks more suited to water polo than football. Yep, it’s basically a lake. Engomi’s pavements? Flooded. Sidewalks? Slippery streams. Hope everyone on the roads slowed down, because it’s been raining cats, dogs, and maybe a few sheep for good measure.

On the bright side, the air finally feels clean after all that dust. On the not-so-bright side, we now have mud. Everywhere. Will we ever be happy?

Still, maybe this surprise downpour will help with the water shortage. Fingers crossed. Stay dry out there, or at least wear boots.
